I never read of any prominent Republican, by the way, who
criticized the Mexican President’s characterization of the U.S.
as “The Other Mexico”. Less than a month later, Pena Nieto was
back on U.S. soil, this time in New York City, for the 69th
General Assembly of the United Nations. It’s always a good idea
to keep tabs of a Mexican presidente while he’s
visiting the United States. Therefore I present below a summary
of Pena Nieto’s four days in the Big Apple:...

Push for requiring civics to graduate a solid idea

Steve Montenegro, R-Litchfield Park, on his proposal that all high-school students pass a basic citizenship exam before graduating ("Legislator: Teens should pass citizen test for diploma," Republic, Thursday). It is appalling that 33 percent of non-immigrant citizens do not know the three branches of government. This should be a bipartisan issue. I would recommend one modification: that the test is administered and passed during a student's junior or senior year, which is closer to when he or she is eligible to vote. Former Arizona Sens. Dennis DeConcini and Jon Kyl should be lauded for their support of the Civics Education Initiative to correct this problem.
